[DR] Which Girl Plays the Best Guy?

If you've seen your fair share of Korean dramas, then you've been introduced to the concept of girls cross-dressing to fit in with the boys. A trend that started only a few years back but has yet to die down. Now, in a good majority of these dramas, a boy [not always the main guy] falls in love with the girl dressed as a guy [note that the boy still thinks the girl is a boy]. Here's a list of dramas that have girls dressing up as boys. It's a good thing Korea is known for its pretty-boys otherwise I don't know how these girls managed to blend in.

The Painter of the Wind - Moon Geunyoung
This drama is the only one on this list that I have yet to see. Nonetheless, I know Moon Geunyoung must have excelled in her role because I have seen her past works. The story is about how she disguises herself as  a boy in search of her father's murderer. However, she meets a master painter who teaches guides her into becoming a great artist.

Sung Kyun Kwan Scandal - Park Minyoung
Here's another saeguk on the list. This story is about a girl who disguises herself as a boy to get into Sung Kyun Kwan University when her brother falls ill. Spoiler Alert: Goro is the first one to find out she's a girl and of course, instead of ratting her out, he protects her [from other guys]. Usually the people who find out first don't reveal it right away but they become the key to the girls' success in hiding it for so long.

Coffee Prince - Yoon Eunhye
To avoid being set up on any more dates, Hankyul [Gong Yoo] hires Eunchan [Yoon Eunhye] to become his gay partner [not knowing that she is in fact a girl]. Eunchan agrees because she needs money and she also begs to work at his coffee shop which is in jeopardy of going bankrupt. She actually acts like a guy so it's no surprise that she was mistaken for one by many people.

You're Beautiful - Park Shinhye
My personal favorite from this list. I loved Park Shinhye's acting. Along with Moon Geunyoung, she is one of the few child actors that are still doing well as adult actors. This drama was about how Minyu takes over her twin brother's role in a popular idol band [A.N. Jell] while he is in the states for surgery. This leads to many hilarious encounters and even those sad moments where you wish there was a copy of the main girl [not a male version] so that the second guy doesn't end up alone.

KPOP - The Ultimate Audition - Go Eunah
Another great drama, but I really hated the ending. Two episodes were cut so they ended up rushing everything in the last 20 minutes. This drama is about a girl who auditions for a new boy-band in order to pursue her dream in the music industry. My only complaint is the kiss scenes. Every time the 2 main characters kissed, I kept seeing Yoochun and Mir kissing so it really did seem like a gay kiss to me. Go Eunah is Mir's sister and the main guy, Park Yoohwan, is Yoochun's [JYJ] brother. There are quite a few familiar faces in the drama. One of them is ZE:A's Kevin, along with members of BoM.

To the Beautiful You - Sulli [F(x)]
I had my doubts about this drama from the start, especially since SM was in charge of it. Not only that, but the original Japanese version set the bar through the roof so I wasn't expecting much. And Sulli is so cute I don't know why no one suspects her. -_- Anyways, if you aren't familiar with the basic storyline, Jaehee [Sulli] disguises herself as a boy to get into the all-boys school that her idol/inspiration Taejoon [Minho] is in because she wants to see him jump [high-jump] again.

Did I miss some cross-dressing girls/dramas? Leave a comment below to tell me who or just let me know what you think. And don't forget to leave your vote in the poll on the left.

  1. I'm a fan of this genre. The best one's You're beautiful. Shin Hye was so adorable I watched all her projects ever since. Second's Coffee Prince. Eun Hye was great, it was her most convincing act for me. The plot was unique too. I loved it. Sungkyunkwan was very entertaining due to Jongki and Ah In. The leads did not float my boat but I liked the story. Will watch Painter of the wind because Geun Yung is a great actress. I echo your negative sentiments for the last two so I do not intend to watch them. I loved Hana Kimi, the best japanese drama to date.
